Atomoxetine for ADHD: A Non-Stimulant Option

Atomoxetine (brand name Strattera) is a non-stimulant prescription medication for ADHD in children and adults. It is not a controlled substance and is often considered when stimulants aren’t effective or aren’t a good fit. It is not sold through our online store; it may be prescribed by a licensed provider after an evaluation.

How Atomoxetine Works

Atomoxetine is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. By increasing norepinephrine activity in the brain, it helps improve attention and reduce impulsivity and hyperactivity. Because it is not a stimulant, it has a low potential for misuse.

How Long It Takes to Work

Unlike stimulants, atomoxetine works gradually. Some people notice changes within the first few weeks, but it can take several weeks of daily use to reach the full effect. It is usually taken once or twice a day.

Who May Benefit

  • People who didn’t respond well to stimulants or had side effects
  • People with a history of substance use, where a non-controlled medication may be preferred
  • People with ADHD and co-occurring anxiety, in some cases (see ADHD & Anxiety)
  • People who want steady, all-day symptom control

Common Side Effects

  • Nausea, stomach upset or decreased appetite
  • Tiredness or dizziness
  • Dry mouth and constipation
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • Sexual side effects in some adults

Important Safety Information

  • Atomoxetine has a boxed warning about an increased risk of suicidal thoughts in children and teenagers. Anyone taking it should be watched for mood changes, especially in the first months or after a dose change.
  • Rarely, it can cause liver problems. Contact a provider for dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or upper right stomach pain.
  • Do not take it within 14 days of an MAO inhibitor or if you have narrow-angle glaucoma. Some antidepressants can raise atomoxetine levels, so share all your medications with your provider.
